There’s always a wonderful spirit when people gather to help others who are dedicating their careers to serving nonprofit and charitable organizations.
There was a strong feeling of community and mission during the Community Service Public Relations Council’s annual Spectrum Conference. More than 100 people attended this one-day conference on Tuesday at the Sheraton in Clayton, Mo. Congratulations to conference chairman Amie Bossie, the development director at Bellefontaine Cemetery, for an outstanding event.
The challenge with attending or making a presentation at this conference is you can’t be at two places at one time. I was honored to make one of four presentations in the “New to…” track. These sessions offered guidance and strategies for those who are creating marketing and communications plans for their organizations.
However, Everett Dietle, the Director of Communications and Marketing at the Missouri History Museum was presenting, “Controversy and Crisis Communication: Cruse Control Off” at the same time I was presenting. From the feedback I received from participants who attended Mr. Dietle’s presentation, his content was one of the most helpful and beneficial for their position and organization.
I’m looking forward to next year’s conference and helping 2014 conference chairman Ryan Farmer, the communications manager at the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been to this conference or attended a session on a particular topic, I always leave with some actionable items that will help me as a communicator, fundraiser or program director.
